Why isn't an unpictured mother or grandmother counted as a depicted adult?

Because the prepared person entries only describe depicted individuals. A mother, grandmother, or accompanying person can act as a contact, invite, or support without being in the images themselves. Therefore, they are not automatically counted as depicted adults.
